Biography
This season Robin O'Neill will be conducting, amongst others, the Philharmonia Orchestra, the London Philharmonic, the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, the Swedish Chamber Orchestra (including recordings for the Hyperion label). He is Principal Conductor of Orchestra Citta Aperta, L'Aquila, Italy and Music Director of The Motion Arts Group.
In the past few seasons he has conducted the English Chamber Orchestra both at London's South Bank Centre and at several English Summer Festivals and gave the opening gala concert in the newly refurbished Windsor Castle. He made his debut conducting the Philharmonia Orchestra at the Rimini Festival 2000 and will conduct them twice in the Queen Elizabeth Hall this year. Last year he conducted them to huge critical acclaim at the Old Vic Theatre in a Motion Arts Group production of Stravinsky’s ‘Soldier’s Tale' starring Jeremy Irons and Hugh Dancey.
Robin O’Neill and stage director Andrew Steggall (The Motion Arts Group) have developed a new production of this work using Iraqi actors and musicians alongside British and other nationalities in a unique collaboration involving education, photography, TV documentary and performance. Robin O’Neill travelled to Baghdad last year and used his experiences there to explore the effects of war on the people of Iraq and to build meaningful and sustainable relations between artists from different backgrounds and cultures. The Iraq/Soldier’s Tale showed at the Old Vic Theatre in January and will tour throughout the Middle East .
Over the last few years Robin O’Neill has regularly broadcast on the BBC, Japan Broadcasting Corporation and Swedish Radio and has conducted, amongst others, the Stavanger Symphony, the City of London Sinfonia and the Orchestra Ensemble Kanazawa Japan.
Last year Robin O'Neill and the Orchestra Citta Aperta made a live DVD recording of The Dream of Urizen as part of an ongoing survey of the music of the celebrated Italian composer Carlo Crivelli. They will tour this work extensively next year. Robin O’Neill was music director for Carlo Crivelli’s sound track for the 2006 Berlin Film Festival award winning Chinese film “Little Red Flower” by Zhang Yuan.

Robin O'Neill is a Grammy nominated recording artist with more than thirty CD's to his name with labels such as Sony, Philips, Decca and Hyperion. As a chamber musician he has worked with partners such as Mikhail Pletnev, Mitsuko Uchida, Noriko Ogawa, Christoph Eschenbach, Pascal Roge, Boris Beresovsky, Aleksander Madzar, Barry Douglas, Elizabeth Leonskaya, Stephen Kovasovich, Howard Shelley, Pinchas Zuckerman, Salvatore Accardo, Michael Collins and Isabelle van Keulen. He has performed by invitation in front of Prince Charles, Prince of Wales.
During his career as a bassoonist Robin O'Neill worked with all of the worlds finest conductors (including Karajan, Giulini, Solti, Abbado, Levine, Kubelik, Boulez, Muti, Barenboim, Sanderling, Svetlanov and Gergiev) both as soloist and orchestral principal.
